Galileo Galilei was an Italian Astronomer, Scientist and Philosopher. He lived throughout the 17th century. He was famous for many experiments that he did to prove he was right. Galileo also proved that the sun was in the center of the universe instead of the earth, like Aristotle thought. He got accused of heresy. Even though Galileo was right about his theory, most people believed Aristotle.
Galileo Galilei
To make people believe him, Galileo wrote a book called Two Chief Systems of the World. In the book Galileo Galilei did many experiments and wrote how he KNEW that the sun was in the center of everything and everything revolved around the sun.
In the early years Galileo went to school at the age of 13. He was very open minded due to him being home schooled until he was a teenager. In school he was a very smart student and did very good in math.
At the age of 21 Galileo moved to Florence. He started teaching kids and did many experiments on his spare time. Later on in his life he met a woman named Marina Gamba, and had 3 kids with her.
In 1624 he got sent to Rome by the Pope Urban VIII and he was forced to write a fictional book about Copernicus's ideas, and that they were wrong. At the end of the book, Galileo did not disagree with Copernicus's ideas because he knew they were right. When the book was published, Galileo was accused of heresy, and was sent to house arrest for the rest of his life.
In 1634 he wrote a book called Two New Sciences In that book he mentioned mostly math and the beginnings of Physics. His days were ending very fast after he got an eye infection and lost his eye sight. On January 8, 1642 Galileo Galilei died.
Moon Observations:
Click here Galileo quickly spotted mountains on the moon, and also found some craters by just peeking through his telescope. He outsmarted Aristotle by observations. Aristotle said that the moon was a perfect sphere, But he was wrong once again!! One of Galileo Galilei's Drawings of the moon. ----->
Galileo Looking Through a Telescope
Jupiter and it' moons:
Galileo once was observing Jupiter when he saw 4 black dots around it. He wondered what it was until days after he'd been observing them and sketching them, he finally knew what they were.. They were Jupiter's moons. He was the first person again to discover a new object in space. Once again Galileo Disproved Aristotle, because Aristotle said everything went around us. Which is NOT true, because those moons went around Jupiter.
Name of Jupiter's moons:
1. ( Grand Duke Cosimo )
2. Io
3. Ganymede 4. Europa 5. Callisto
Saturn's rings:
Galileo Galileo was the first person to discover Saturn's Ring's !! He saw through his telescope round oval shapes circling Saturn.
This is what Galileo though Saturn's Rings looked like .
Saturn ( Arn't the colors BEAUTIFUL !! )

Sunspot on the Sun:
Galileo saw that what Christopher Scheiner thought was planets going around the sun, were really spots. Aristotle thought that the sun was perfect, There Galileo proved that both Christopher and Aristotle were wrong.
Galileo Galilei's Drawing of sunspots.
- Galileo's Drawing of the sunspots -> (The drawing looks pretty similar to the pictures of the sunspots above)
Venus has phases:
Galileo found out that Venus had phases just like the Moon. Copernicus was right then! Copernicus thought that if the moon and Venus has phases then that meant the sun would have to be in the center of the universe. If we didn't go around the sun, then we would not see the phases of the moon. So therefor Galileo saw the phases and said that all planets revolve around the sun. This is a drawing Galileo drew to show the phases of Venus. They look exactly like the phases of the Moon!!
